Location: 100 Massee Lane Ft. Valley GA
Times: T-S 10 am-4:30 pm Sundays 1:00 pm-4:30 pm
Cost: $5 Adults, $15 Box Lunch ToursWinter is sweeter at Massee Lane Gardens, when one of the world’s finest camellia collections puts on a show that lasts from fall to early spring. Georgia’s most welcoming botanical garden is in peak bloom—with the most camellia varieties blooming at one time—throughout the months of January and February.
A hands-on camellia care and culture workshop will be held on January 27, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Participants will learn how to successfully plant, grow, graft, air-layer, and hybridize camellias.
A demonstration on waxing camellia blossoms will show how to extend the enjoyment of cut flowers for several weeks.
Lunch, grafting understock and self-guided tours of Massee Lane Gardens are included in the $20 registration fee.
Space is limited and advance registration is due by Monday, January 22, 2018. Contact Tommy and Brenda Alden (478) 825-1337 or by email tommy@countylinenursery.com with questions about the workshop or registration.
Celebrate the opening of peak season with a free visit to Massee Lane Gardens on February 3, 2018. Guests will enjoy self-guided tours of the nine acres of specialty camellia gardens and two museum galleries exhibiting the largest collection of Edward Marshall Boehm porcelain sculptures on display in the United States from 10:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
Massee Lane Gardens offers extended hours in February and is open Mondays in addition to the regular hours of Tuesday through Sunday. An easy-to-follow map of the 30-acre botanical garden and museum galleries leads guests through the seven specialty camellia gardens at their own pace. Enhance your visit with a professionally guided tour on weekdays in January and February for groups of ten or more for $5 per person.
Tours include a brief overview of the history of Massee Lane Gardens and a slow-paced narrated walk calling guests’ attention to the many unique camellia varieties that have thrived beneath the pine forest since the 1930s.
Make the visit for your group of ten or more even more special by scheduling a box lunch tour for $15 per person, which includes admission, a tour guide and lunch prepared by Two Friends Casseroles of Montezuma, Georgia. The box lunch menu includes a handcrafted sandwich on artisanal bread or croissant with a choice of Ham or Turkey, homemade Chicken Salad or Pimento Cheese, with a side of fresh fruit salad, chips, a pickle spear and homemade cookie, and chilled bottled water. Gluten free and vegetarian options are also available.
Please make guided tour reservations a week in advance and lunch tours two weeks in advance. Tours are scheduled on a first come, first served basis, so call toll free (877) 422-6355 soon for the best selection of dates.
The Festival’s finale will be the Middle Georgia Camellia Society’s and Flint Energies’ competitively judged camellia show on February 24 and 25, 2018. Growers from all over the Southeast will bring over a thousand camellia blooms to be judged by American Camellia Society accredited judges.
A special novice show class is available for home gardeners to enter blooms and compete for prizes. There is no cost to enter blooms and experts are available to help identify and prepare blooms for entry.
Bloom entry is from 7:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.
The show opens to public on Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., and there is no cost to view the show.
